Ocean Beach Pavilion
May 11, 2024 10:00a - 5:00p
Internationally known artist Mark Shasha will offer a Master Class in painting to the first 50 individuals (high school age and older) who buy tickets.
Mark's suggested materials to bring to the workshop
Anyone is welcome to come and paint the cove after the class.
Parking at Ocean Beach is no cost that day but there is also a flea market that day which will attract many people.
Mark Shasha's Oil Painting Workshop
Mark's suggestsed Oil Painting Workshop Materials List:
BRING WHATEVER YOU ARE COMFORTABLE USING.
What follows are suggestions.
PAINTS Let’s paint! I strongly recommend Michael Harding paints if you can afford them. Most others are fine. Please avoid the cheapest student grade paints:
Cadmium Yellow, Medium Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Orange
Permanent Green, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Phthalocyanine or Phthalo Blue
Cadmium Red Light
Alizarin Crimson, Transparent Red Oxide, Titanium White
Raw Umber
Raw Sienna
Amethyst (Optional)
Naples Yellow (Optional)
Underpainting White (I like to use Michael Harding Stack Lead White for texture; a non-lead option would be Grumbacher Underpainting White)
ART MATERIALS:
You will need an outdoor painting easel or pochade box. A French easel is fine. There are many kinds. I use the “M Box” pochade with a tripod which is no longer made but there are others: Strada, Sienna, day tripper, etc
Odorless Turpentine (Gamsol is my choice) and a small cup or container. Don’t use the green Turpenoid.
A clear painting gel medium (liquin impasto or Gamblin)
An assortment of large and small brushes.
Palette knife
Paper Towels - Viva won’t unspool in the wind.
A value scale (shows white, black and the grays in between)
A small grey-toned sketchpad with a black charcoal pencil, a white charcoal pencil and a kneeded eraser for making thumbnail sketches.
A few panels (9x12, 8x10, 11x14) I recommend oil-primed. Sourcetek, Raymar and Centurian are good brands but avoid cheap ones. Also avoid the smooth surface gessobords unless you know how to use them. Paint tends to slip around on the slick coating.
Viewfinder. I like “the Viewcatcher”, but use whatever works for you.
OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS:
A HAT WITH A WIDE BRIM
SUNSCREEN
BUG SPRAY with DEET – Cutter seems to work best for me.
SMALL PLASTIC BAGS FOR YOUR TRASH
SENSE OF HUMOR – outdoor painting can be challenging.
OPTIONAL: A LIGHTWEIGHT FOLDING CHAIR
